Continued protection won for Mountain Caribou

The last remaining Southern Selkirk Mountain Caribou that straddle the US-Canada border have won continued protection from the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service.

Opponents including Bonners County and Idaho Snowmobile Association sought to remove protections.

But Noah Greenwald with the Centre for Biological Diverity says officials recognise these are the last remaining Caribou in the lower 48th when once they were plentiful.

Greenwald says fast action is needed to save the species last numbered at just 19 in Idaho!

He says that should include bringing in caribou from Canada to bolster genetic resilience.
