Nelson Search and Rescue (NSAR) were called to extract an injured skier out of the Whitewater backcountry Saturday afternoon.
One of a group of foreign tourists had injured their knee and because of the remote location in the 5-Mile Basin it was decided a helicopter was needed before day-light was lost.
A successful “hover rescue” was made.
Nelson SAR are re-iterating the need to make a distress call right away, especially with the limited day-light at this time of year.
The group of tourists had initially delayed their 911 call for fear of being charged for a rescue.
But BC SAR – like their fellow agencies across Canada- do not charge for this service.
