It’s time to consider the future of the Nelson Civic Arena as an ice hockey venue.
That’s the message from Steve Kobs, the Chair of the Regional Sports Council that runs the facility for all ice users.
He says the trend in ice rental continues to decline along with young players and the facility stands empty half the year.
He notes the civic arena has changed with the times over the decades, it was once a badminton hall, and it may need to change again.
Kobs suggests a multi-use turfed arena may be a solution but he says all stakeholders need to discuss the future of the Civic Arena campus as a whole.
