The suggestion from the local sports council that one of Nelson’s ice surfaces be switched to artificial turf is not over the moon.
That’s the word from Mayor Deb Kozak as the city faces some stark realities on the economic viability of keeping the secondary ice rink at the Civic Centre.
There has been a constant decline in ice rentals with fewer hockey players.
She says changing to a multi-use, all-year surface may be an option.
Kozak has promised community engagement this year regarding the future of the 80 year old Civic Centre building, what’s to become of it, and how it’s going to impact taxpayers.
