SD8 rankings for Salmo/Slocan reconfiguration

Salmo Elementary School could be closed and the secondary school expanded to a K-12.

That’s the highest scoring reconfiguration scenario for Salmo presented by the Kootenay Lake School District as it wrapped up its community engagement this week.

The district’s Kim Morris says it could involve portables, some new construction or using spare space in a neighboring community building.

Another highly ranked scenario would see the Salmo Secondary building become a K-7 with grades 8-12 travelling to Nelson.

Meanwhile the top three ranked scenarios for reconfiguration of schools in the Slocan Valley involve Winlaw Elementary. The top two options see a rebuild or renovation.

Morris  explains the third highest ranked scenario involves closing Winlaw and moving students to WE Graham. That’s because even though enrolment at Winlaw is growing WE Graham is seen as a better facility.

Morris says these ranked scenarios for reconfiguration – just like all others across the district – are just data and not recommendations.

The SD8 board will review all scenarios in the district and take public feedback before coming up with a plan in the coming months. You can view the score/ranked scenarios at
