Columbia River Treaty talks not imminent, mayor says

Nakusp’s mayor says talks are not about to get underway on a revised Columbia River Treaty.

That’s despite a report Canada is poised to name a lead federal negotiator.

Karen Hamling says the announcement was premature.

But Hamling says in the meantime lots of meetings are going on to refine our position.

Both sides have expressed a desire to modify the treaty, which was signed in 1964 to provide flood control and can be cancelled or changed starting in 2024.
