Police to go softly in panhandling enforcement

Nelson’s proposed panhandling bylaw will not be enforced in a strong-arm way.

That’s the message from Police Chief Paul Burkart who says it’s all about setting some boundaries and rules on the street.

The regulations propose no panhandling within 5-metres of certain locations, not after sunset and with a one hour time limit per location.

He says bylaw officers will educate and remind panhandlers before any fines are issued.

Restorative Justice is also an option should fines not be paid.

Nelson council will pass the bylaw subject to reviewing the enforcement policy.
