Big increases to distracted driving penalties

Tough new sanctions are coming for distracted driving in BC.

As of June 1st it will cost $543 for a first offence of using a cell phone while driving. That’s a $368 fine plus a $175 penalty premium from ICBC.

A second offence within a 12 month period will see a total penalty of $888.

Repeat offenders may be labelled “high risk” and be subject to driving prohibitions.

In 2014, distracted and inattentive driving was a contributing factor in killing 66 people and seriously injuring 630 more on BC roads.
