Local mills seek RDCK support for changes

Our area’s lumber mills are asking the RDCK to support their call for the province to change timber harvesting regulations.

A delegation of the Interior Lumber Manufacturers Association went in front of the board.

They say mass raw log exports and policies by government have not truly promoted value-added production.

The mills want new regulations that will optimize and incentivize the trading of logs among themselves so the right log gets to the right mill for their respective production.

Local owner Ken Kalesnikoff says their future depends on the province helping them keep their niche.

With the annual allowance cut likely to keep declining in BC the local mills want the RD’s support as they call on the province for continued access to supply assuming a high level of environmental stewardship.
