Nelson releases police director’s report

Nelson taxpayers now have an in-depth breakdown of the cost of its police department and what city council thinks of it.

The city has posted to its website the documents surrounding a recent controversial decision from the province on adding more staffing to the department.

Mayor Deb Kozak says creative thinking is needed because it’s going to cost.

Police wages have risen 70 per cent the past 20 years, far exceeding inflation.

The recent provincial decision also called for a review of the department’s service delivery model.

Kozak says bringing in some RCMP officers to work alongside city police may be an option.
