Kokanee recovery plan released by Province

The Province has released its detailed recovery plan for the dwindling Kokanee stocks in Kootenay Lake.

It estimates a full recovery will take between six and twelve years.

The primary tools for recovery will be to supplement Kokanee eggs and fry from outside sources in BC  into the Meadow Creek spawning channel and Lardeau River.

Other elements include continued nutrient additions and sport fishing closures.

Kokanee numbers are at their lowest on record in Kootenay Lake. They have been decimated by their main predator- the Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout – which are also now in decline.

A public open house on the Kokanee Lake Action Plan goes Thursday evening at the Balfour Hall 7 pm till 9 pm.
