Large turnout opposes Balfour Terminal move

An estimated 200 people came through the public open house last night regarding the possible move of the Balfour Ferry Terminal to Queens Bay.

By far the majority sentiment at Redfish School was against the move.

John Betts who speaks for Queens Bay residents says they’re in a state of shock and need more than the three week timeline to digest everything

The ministry’s Kirk Hanrahan inists the move is not a done deal but a decision is needed by the fall.

The shallow West Arm is damaging the Osprey ferry so either the ministry spends $25 million on the move to Queens Bay to reduce the crossing time by 50%, or spend up to $40 million to dredge and upgrade Balfour and build a new second vessel.

He says staying put could also cost an extra million a year in operating costs.
