Two Kootenay Lake schools off chopping block

The Kootenay Lake school board voted Tuesday evening to use provincial funding to keep Winlaw and Jewett elementary schools from closing.

However, they voted to pass the first two readings of bylaws that would see the closure of Trafalgar, Creston Education Centre, Yahk, and Salmo elementary.

Chair Lenora Tremanan says third reading and adoption is expected to come next week.

Most of the decisions were unanimous, or nearly so.

Last week the Ministry of Education announced that Jewett, along with Winlaw or W.E. Graham in Slocan, would qualify for funding under its new rural education enhancement fund.

We’ll take a closer look at each of the schools involved over the next few days.
