Trail RCMP sorting out dognapping allegations

Who does Gary the puppy belong to? That’s what Trail RCMP are trying to determine.

They say they were called Monday morning to a reported dognapping in the 1400 block of Bay Avenue. A 26-year-old city man claimed his six-week-old puppy wasn’t returned to him after he paid someone to walk him.

Officers found the puppy with a 47-year-old city man, who said he received the dog from another person, not the man who filed the complaint. However, he surrendered the puppy to police after admitting he didn’t return him at an arranged time.

Police were notified a second person also claimed ownership.

The puppy, nicknamed Gary, will be turned over into the care of the Castlegar SPCA until the investigation is completed.

“This is an unusual case for the police,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich said. “Trail RCMP believes Gary may be stolen and will try to determine ownership before Gary’s return. Unfortunately, interviewing Gary himself wasn’t much help to us.”

Anyone with information about this incident or claiming ownership can talk to police.
