Castlegar hotel’s mini-storage application rejected

A Castlegar hotel will not be allowed to turn a former banquet room into mini-storage.

The SureStay applied for rezoning to create a 300-metre facility with 48 units.

During a sparsely attended public hearing, a hotel representative explained the room needs significant work and also faces the problem of no longer having its own washrooms or kitchen, which have been leased to the Grand Buddha restaurant.

If approved, the hotel would have been required to do fire protection upgrades and the storage business would have been restricted to 7.5 per cent of the gross floor area of the building.

However, council voted 5-2 against the rezoning at its meeting last week.
