Castlegar council briefs: Investigating strata servicing to cost $2,500

The City of Castlegar will charge $2,500 to investigate providing services for bare-land stratas that want to dissolve.

Council approved a policy last week after Emerald Green residents approached the city about taking over maintenance of their street and its infrastructure.

They would like to relinquish responsibility for Emerald Crescent and dissolve their strata, converting their properties to fee simple lots.

They’re hoping the city will take over snow plowing, as well as maintenance of fire hydrants, street lights, and sanitary sewer lines.

City planner Meeri Durand explained the city has never dealt with such a request before, so there was no policy in place and no way to recoup costs of the cost/benefit and risk analysis required.

Council agreed to introduce a fee just to study the idea, which does not obligate them to follow through on assuming responsibility for strata infrastructure.

City staff say they are aware of five other bare-land stratas that could submit similar requests.

Cash set aside for Castlegar-Selkirk link

City council has agreed to contribute toward a feasibility study on a new river crossing. The Sunrise Rotary Club wants to look at connecting the Selkirk College campus to the rest of Castlegar. Council will chip in $5,000 from its community enhancement fund.

Contract talks to begin

Collective bargaining begins this month between the City of Castlegar and its unionized staff, represented by CUPE Local 2262. The current contract took effect March 1, 2019 and expires Aug. 31.
