Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre pledged to fight Swiss-based Glencore’s attempted takeover of Teck Resources during a rally in Trail this afternoon.
“Mining communities across this area deserve to have local control,” he told a packed room of supporters. “Teck Resources is one of the last major mining companies and a Pierre Poilievre-led government and Pierre Poilievre opposition will fight tooth and nail against the hostile takeover of Teck Resources by Glencore.”
Glencore has made unsolicited offers to take over Teck, or at least its coal assets. Teck rebuffed the offers, but was sufficiently spooked to cancel a shareholders vote on a plan to split its coal and metals divisions into separate companies.
Poilievre also promised to speed up mining permits during a 30-minute speech that railed against the federal Liberals and New Democrats on many fronts, with chanting supporters joining his call to eliminate the carbon tax.
Poilievre was introduced by his wife Anaida and Kamloops-area MP Frank Caputo, who serves as the Conservatives’ associate justice critic.
Later in the afternoon Poilievre visited Kalesnikoff Lumber in Tarrys to speak to workers.
