Man charged with Castlegar arson

A 28-year-old Castlegar man has been charged with arson after some wooden pallets burned behind a business downtown.

The incident happened June 4 and in a news release police say a lone suspect, later identified as Riley Jackson, was caught lighting the pallet and a piece of cardboard on fire before leaving it to burn.

However, police say the building was made of brick and the put itself out before spreading.

“Though damage was minimal Mr. Jackson’s actions posed a great risk to property and the public,” police said.

Jackson was arrested by Castlegar RCMP and released with a court date, however police did not mention that they had a suspect until today.

On Saturday, Jackson was arrested a second time for breaching his bail conditions. He was released again to appear in court on July 26.

Police noted they and firefighters have recently responded to several suspicious fires in parks, forests, and inside the bathroom of a local business. No one has been charged in those incidents.
