A fire on CP Rail trestle at Genelle on Friday was the result of arson and caused $1 million worth of damage, RCMP say.
Kootenay Boundary Fire and Rescue was called around 11 p.m. and arrived to find the bridge north of Lower China Creek Road, where the tracks cross China Creek, fully engulfed.
Police say the fire was deliberately set. RCMP and CP Rail Police are both investigating.
They ask anyone who witnessed anything suspicious around that time, including anyone walking or cycling along the tracks, to call them.
Cpl. James Grandy noted in a news release that the fire comes in the wake of several recent suspected arsons in Castlegar. Charges have been laid in only one fire, but the suspect is at large after skipping a court date.
Kootenay Boundary Fire and Rescue said the trestle blaze spread to the surrounding trees and brush and kept them busy until early Saturday.
Sixteen firefighters responded.
CP Rail spokeswoman Rebecca Stephen said repairs were completed over the weekend and the line is back in service.
