New Castlegar playground faces delay

The installation of the new castle play structure at Castlegar’s Millennium Park could face a three-to-four week delay.

City engineering manager Travis Christianson told council this month site prep by Marwest Industries Ltd. is underway, including installation of fencing and removal of the existing play structure and trees.

However, Parkworks Solutions of Kelowna, which was awarded the contract to install the equipment, won’t be able to get to it as quickly as hoped because they are busy on other projects.

While they were supposed to start at the end of August, now they are likely to start toward the end of September.

“Which is unfortunate news,” Christianson said. “We have been in discussions with them to expedite the installation while they’re on site.”

He said that could mean increasing the size of the crew.

Christianson said the delay in assembling the structure could in turn mean a delay in installing the pour-in-place surface, which needs to be done at a certain temperature and while it’s dry out.

Councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff said the company needs to be held to its contract and suggested legal action if necessary.

The 12-meter high playground is to be billed as Canada’s tallest castle play structure.

The overall project, which includes other components, is budgeted at $1.9 million, of which $1.2 million has come through a federal grant.

Council heard that Marwest was asked to dispose of the existing playground equipment and will go to the Casino neighbourhood outside of Trail.
