If you have considered becoming a firefighter, now could be your chance.
Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue (KBRFR) is looking to bolster its ranks by reaching out to community minded residents to join one of their paid-on-call stations in Fruitvale, Montrose, Genelle, Warfield, and Rossland.
This is the second year the service has run this recruitment drive, in the aim to grow, reinforce and increase current membership.
“Historically, we’ve always tried to carry around 20 to 25 paid -on -call firefighters in all of our stations.” said Glen Gallamore, Deputy Fire Chief.
“Unfortunately, due to current circumstances, time constraints and commitments were kind of running between 10 and 15. So we’re definitely looking to increase those numbers to help us.”
“You don’t really need specific skills to join. We’re committed to training all our members up to meet the current provincial standards. “
“We train them up to become a full firefighter. You get your first responder medical training, Wildland Firefighter 1, and then in time you get your driver training and airbrakes. So other than just being fit and active and engaged and just want to help out your community, your neighbors and friends, that’s kind of what we’re looking for.”
The call is open to anyone that wants to make a difference in our Regional District. Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a college student, a seasoned professional, or someone seeking a new purpose, becoming a paid on-call firefighter (POC) with KBRFR offers a fulfilling opportunity to make a real difference in your community.
“Its a really rewarding job.” said Gallamore.
“You get to meet some of what I think are some of the best people on the planet, and there’s nothing that makes you feel better when you go home at night knowing that you’re there to help your community and your neighbors, your relatives, your friends.”
Applications for this year’s intake are now open and will close on June 30, 2024.

Application packs can be picked up at the fire department’s headquarters in Trail, located at 843 Rossland Ave or any POC stations in Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Genelle, or Fruitvale.

A criminal record check from the RCMP detachment and a driver’s abstract will need to be submitted with applications. Applicants must also be at least 19 years old and be prepared to attend weekly training sessions from 7 – 9pm at their local fire hall.
