Salmo and area residents will have to wait a bit longer for their first splash of the season, after mechanical issues at the Salmo Pool forced the Regional District of Central Kootenay to push back opening day to June 16.
The pool was originally supposed to re-open for the summer on June 5; however, during this spring’s start-up for the pool, some deficiencies were identified.
Last year, the facility had extensive work done to upgrade the mechanical room, including the addition of two new high-efficiency boilers, new plumbing, and a new chemical feeding system.
Craig Stanley, Operations & Asset Manager with the RDCK, said crews had tried to get the upgrades complete before the winter; however, some delays in procurement of equipment prevented their completion.
“When we waited till the springtime to put water back in the pool to commission the new boilers and the new sand filters, and test drive some of the new electrical and even pool management systems, it wasn’t quite synchronized, and we’re just working to dial those things in.
“We have some additional plumbing to do and we have a little bit of balancing to do on a new pump. The timing didn’t quite work out with the start of the new pool season, but we are confident that we’ll have trade people and pool operators in place to get that pool operating.”
This work is expected to be completed by the week of June 10. This will then provide staff with approximately a week to have the facility operational, including filling, filtering, and balancing the pool.
Once the work is complete, the pool will be open until August 27.
