City of Trail seeking community members to sit on Community Safety Task Force

The City of Trail is looking to recruit three community members for its Community Safety Task Force, including one specifically from the senior citizen community and one from the business community.

The Trail Community Safety Task Force meets once a month to share ideas and insights with Council on matters that impact public safety.

Committee Chair and City Councillor Terry Martin says the city is looking to recruit a senior specifically to ensure their concerns are represented.

“Everyone on the committee felt that it was necessary to have a representative from the seniors’ community. With what’s happening in Trail—though it’s not different from any other community—some seniors just don’t feel safe downtown, and we want them to have a voice on our committee.”

Currently, the committee is composed of representatives from the local RCMP detachment, the Trail Regional Fire Chief, Interior Health, Community Futures, the Trail Community Action Team, the Trail Association for Community Living, bylaw enforcement, Emergency Health Services, the District Public Library, and City staff.

The task force was re-established in Trail last August and has since helped the city work with Interior Health to establish temporary cooling and warming shelters during the winter and summer months.

Its mandate is to serve in an advisory capacity to Council by providing input on matters impacting community safety and advice on strategies to enhance public safety and reduce crime in the community.

Martin says the city received multiple requests from community members wishing to join the committee, which is why they’ve opened up recruitment.

“We’re responding to their wish and desire to join the Task Force to help out. We’re trying to make it open and inclusive. We want to ensure that Trail is a safer place for everyone; we want it to be an area where people can enjoy the downtown core and other parts of the town as well. We’re not just focusing on the downtown section.”

Those interested in becoming a member are encouraged to read the Terms of Reference and submit a letter of introduction and expression of interest to the City of Trail’s General Manager of Corporate Services at [email protected].
