BC NDP’s Steve Morissette claims victory for Kootenay-Monashee

BC NDP candidate Steve Morissette has come out on top in Kootenay-Monashee after polls closed in the 2024 provincial election.

Morissette earned 51.84 percent of the ballot after all ballot boxes were counted in Saturday’s provincial election, with BC Conservative’s Glen Byle coming in  behind with 39.07 percent of the vote.

Wet weather didn’t dampen the celebration at Fruitvale Curling Rink where Morissette and his team gathered on the Saturday evening.

“It feels amazing. It’s overwhelming.” said Morissette.

“The team won this. I learned something in this election that candidates don’t win elections. It’s a team of people I do.”

Morissette says now the real work begins.

“I will do my very best. I will work for this area. I love the area. It has so much potential and there’s so many challenges that I’m eager to start working to solve some of the issues we have around health care, unhoused education.”

“There’s so many things to work on and we’ll work on it a step at a time.”

Polling results as of election night can be found below:

  • Steve Morissette – BC NDP – 9,950 (51.84%)
  • Glen Byle – BC Conservative Party – 7,500 (39.07%)
  • Donovan Cavers – BC Green Party –  1,745 (9.09%)
