Residents are being warned to be vigilant with food waste and locking vehicles and homes after Trail and Greater District RCMP has responded to a number of bear-related incidents over the last week.
On Friday, October 25, officers received a report about an attempted break-in to a vehicle in the 100 block of Haig Street, in Warfield.
The officer attended the scene and noticed bear paw prints all over the vehicle. The owner believed that there may have been a food attractant left inside overnight.
“In order to reduce human-wildlife conflict, please lock your vehicle and remove all possible bear attractants from your vehicles and property.” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
Later that evening, officers responded to a report of a bear that had broken into a residence in the 200 block of Rossland Avenue, in Trail.
The occupants called police and locked themselves in a room after the bear entered their residence.
Officers located the well-fed bear and scared it off the property.
“The bear was fat and likely ready for hibernation. Until this time arrives, please make sure your vehicle and residence are secure, and clean up all potential food sources,” said Sgt. Wicentowich.
“Trail RCMP has spoken to the BC Conservation Officer Service and we hope to see a bigger presence of human-wildlife conflict reduction programs operating in the area soon.”
