The Village of Warfield is undertaking a Municipal Sustainability Study to assess its sustainability as a standalone municipality.
The study will identify and explore changes within the current local government structure, as well as to the structure itself, aimed at addressing sustainability challenges.
A media release from the Village of Warfield states that potential restructuring options include municipal amalgamation, which would involve joint action with a neighbouring municipality and/or the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. These options will be explored at a high level in the study.
The recently established Warfield Municipal Sustainability Advisory Committee will oversee the study, supported by a team of independent local government consultants.
The committee and consultants met on October 28 to review and endorse an interim report on the current state of the community’s services, finances, and governance.
In January, the committee will meet again to review the consultants’ assessment of the Village’s sustainability as a standalone municipality under current conditions. They will also be presented with potential changes within the existing structure aimed at enhancing sustainability.
Then, in March, the committee will meet again to review restructuring options, including amalgamation. However, a detailed examination of potential restructuring options won’t be the study’s focus until the second phase, if desired by the community.
In February, all households will receive an update in the mail from the committee. This will include information on the assessment of the Village’s sustainability within its current structure for public review.
Later in February, the committee will host a Town Hall in Warfield to present findings and answer residents’ questions.
Specific upcoming dates are as follows:
- Monday, January 20, 2025 (5:30 pm) — Committee Meeting to review consultants’ sustainability assessment
- Monday, February 24, 2025 (5:30 pm) — Town Hall at the Warfield Community Hall
- Monday, March 31, 2025 (5:30 pm) — Committee Meeting to review potential restructuring options
