New federal electricity regulations are unnecessary overreach, BC biz council says

The federal government should stay out of regulating electricity production, says the BC Business Council.

In response to new federal electricity regulations released this week, the council says they fail to recognize that provinces have jurisdiction over the development and management of electricity, not the federal government.

The council says the new rules are inefficient, inappropriate government overreach, expensive, and duplicate what provinces are already doing.

They say the federal regulations’ targets for climate protection are not possible without putting reliability at risk for electricity customers. They add the regulations’ one-size-fits-all approach does not account for the unique energy systems of each province, and will punish regions that rely more on fossil fuels.
