Newell more hopeful about Nelson rec funding debate

A regional director for rural Nelson is feeling better about the ongoing recreation funding debate.

An interim agreement suggested by the city was approved this week by the regional district board.

Tom Newell says it bodes well for further talks.

Under the arrangement Nelson and area residents won’t see a tax increase this year to fund the rec complex.

But the city still stands to receive a $184,000 refund if a new model isn’t worked out by the end of 2016.

Newell previously said he felt like a hammer was being held over his head.
