Kootenay Co-op proposes alternative to affordable housing payment

The Kootenay Co-op is proposing a different sort of contribution to affordable housing in Nelson.

As developer of Nelson Commons, the co-op has to pay $54,000 to the city’s affordable housing fund.

But project manager Russell Precious says they’re proposing to instead create three restricted resale units.

They would go for 25 per cent below market price — a contribution worth about $225,000.

If approved the city would assume an administrative role in any resale of the units.

However some councillors aren’t convinced it’s a good idea.

Janice Morrison would rather the co-op pay the $54,000 as originally expected.

Council will ask its housing committee for a recommendation.
