A popular trail near Nelson has been closed on a trial basis because of annual grizzly bear activity.
The section of the Nelson-Salmo Great Northern rail bed between the Cottonwood Lake parking area and Hall Siding will be closed until June 15th.
The grizzlies forage that area- especially around Apex and Camp Busk- in the spring.
The conservation office and bear biologists figure the two month closure will help ensure public safety and reduce the local bear population to human exposure.
