Culture of conservation catching on at City of Nelson

A culture of energy awareness and conservation among City workers is catching on in Nelson.

So says Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program Co-ordinator Fiona Galbraith in announcing the City will achieve its goal of a 25% reduction in corporate emissions in its first 5-year phase.

She gives an example of staff at the sewer treatment plant using their own initiative to explore why propane use was so high.

In that example a new type of seal on pipes is now saving taxpayers $15,000 a year.

Buildings have been audited and changes to equipment and practices have seen the positive results.

The vehicle fleet will be among the next targets for increased efficiency.
