There is a marketing opportunity with Castlegar’s natural camas plant population.
This from the Kootenay Native Plant Society who want city council to designate a conservation and restoration area in Millennium Park.
Castlegar is the only area in B.C’s interior to have ancient camas which was an important food and trading commodity for First Nations.
Local author Eileen Delehanty Pearkes – who sat with the group in front of council this week – says there are tourists who are interested in local indigenous stories.
The group told council they couldn’t understate how significant this plant is culturally.
