The MP for BC Southern Interior is disappointed his food safety bill was defeated by parliament.
New Democrat Alex Atamanenko is speaking after his proposed bill – that he hoped would overhaul the horse meat industry – saw a result of 150 votes against and 102 for. The bill will now not make it to the committee stage.
He says he doesn’t know what the opposition to the bill was.
Atamanenko says he is happy that he received support from across the aisle as conversatives and liberals voted in favor of the bill.
His bill would have banned horse slaughter in Canada unless the animal was raised for human consumption and has a lifetime medical record.
