The City Of Nelson wants the province to change the way local taxpayers contribute towards hospital upgrades and equipment.
The funding system currently sees regional taxpayers chipping in 40% of any infrastructure renewal with Interior Health paying 60%.
But Nelson argues using property tax to do that is unfair as it’s the primary revenue source for already stretched local governments and they cannot be expected to meet hospital expenditures with it as well.
And Nelson Councillor Janice Morrison says the current system is uneven in two main ways.
Morrison says there needs to be a different system for paying into regional hospital funds where every taxpayer pays the same wherever they are.
