RDCK ready to finalize agreement with Recycle BC

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has just about finalized an agreement with Recycle BC.  Garry Jackman, Area A Director, says the two sides have agreed on 12 core depots that will be supported by Recycle BC.

“We have given staff the authority to move forward with a 12 core depot agreement, but of course it’s not signed, so that is our plan that be 2019 [sic] that we will start to see Recycle BC paying a little more of their share.”

Jackman says right now there are about 20 to 25 depots in the Regional District, however that number will likely have to decrease.

“We are looking at a reduction in net depots, I would expect. Will probably be different in each sub region [sic] – east, west and central. Part of it is, if you have to start putting fences or locking and different restrictions on these sites, some of them are in the parking lots of private businesses – they can’t fence off an area.”

Jackman says they’ll be looking at usage patterns to determine which stay open and which might close.

“So we will continue to operate several depots over and above the core depot, but those depots we have to carry a larger burden, that means the tax payer has to subsidize, even though we pay the eco fee. So for those additional depots and that is discussion we’ll have over the next few months, how many of them we can sustain and  how many of them we may recommend that we will eliminate some of the smaller depots.”

Once finalized, the agreement would start in 2019.
