Website looks to help new business

A new website was launched by Castlegar and District Economic Development recently. Mark Laver is the economic development officer.  He says the website is a big part of a larger program to help increase opportunity and awareness for new businesses.

“The whole program is relatively new in the last year to two years. As such, this is a critical component of that because one of the first places people look for information is online.”

The website features Events and Reports, businesses for sale or lease, useful links, and other information about the Castlegar area. Laver says it’s goal is to attract business from outside the region, but locally as well.

“80 to 90 per cent of economic development is local, so even local businesses and local entrepreneurs need that information as well.”

Laver says there’s been growth in the retail sector especially.

“The median house hold income here is actually quite high. It’s higher than Kelowna, it’s higher than Burnaby, than Richmond and New Westminster A few other areas as well. So there’s a lot of good jobs and high paying jobs in the area and I think retailers can then capitalize on that.”
