Trail City Council allocated funds to improve the chlorine system at the Aquatic and Leisure Centre this week. Council has put aside $145,000 for the work which should be completed by the end of this year, if everything goes according to plan. Robert Baker with the City’s Park and Recreation department says the improvements come as provincial inspections are anticipated.
“Worksafe BC is going around the province now doing inspections of chlorine gas systems just like they did for ammonia systems earlier this year. We know that we should get this work approved and moving forward so that we can remain in compliance.”
Baker explains what work will be done. “Increasing the height of our exhaust ventilation duct, as well as putting an automatic shut off on the chlorine cylinders so that our staff do not need to enter the room. In the event that there is a chlorine leak, it can be shut off remotely.”
Baker, says a chiller replacement at the Memorial Centre is also part of the plan. “We originally planned to replace one of our chillers in 2018 and we’re able to push that off to 2019 and that allowed us to use funding that was going to be used for our ammonia plant, we can now use for the chlorine system.”
Baker says the chiller is in good shape and was given approval to operate for another year.
The chlorine system work hasn’t been awarded yet, but Baker says a tender will be going out soon. It shouldn’t have any impacts on the day to day operations of the pool.
