Man arrested after Fruitvale woman shot

A 36-year-old Fruitvale woman is in hospital with a gunshot wound to the head and a 39-year-old Nelson man could be facing charges.

RCMP say they were notified around 5 a.m. Monday that the woman had been admitted to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail.

The man who dropped her off left the scene. Police say they seized a vehicle from the hospital parking lot and then located and arrested the man downtown. He was held in custody overnight but has since been released pending further investigation.

“This is going to be a complicated case, which requires a lot of information to be collected,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “We believe we know what happened, however collecting evidence and presenting it to Crown counsel to request criminal charges is going to take more time than initially thought.”

Wicentowich said they are hoping the victim will be able to tell them more, adding that she and the man know each other.

RCMP want to hear from any witnesses or with anyone with information on the incident.
