Castlegar brush fire unrelated to homeless encampment

Castlegar’s fire chief says a brush fire Wednesday is not considered suspicious, nor is it related to any homeless encampment.

Sam Lattanzio said they have a “pretty good idea” what caused the fire on private land off Woodland Drive, but they are still investigating.

However, he stressed it had nothing to do with homelessness.

The fire was called in just before 1 p.m. and was initially reported at about 40 by 40 feet but “turned out to be quite a bit bigger.” It was threatening to go up the hillside.

“It was a bit challenging, but we were able to get in there. We responded with our engine and a command unit with a wildfire skid on it. We attacked it and doused it out.”

Lattanzio also reminded residents that city bylaws prohibit the burning of yard and garden waste.
