RCMP say they recovered a bag of booze following a break-in at the liquor store in East Trail.
On Saturday at 4:18 a.m. an officer responded to an alarm and discovered someone had smashed the glass on the front door and taken several bottles of liquor.
However, a short distance away an officer found a hidden bag with several bottles in it, worth about $900. Police suspect the bag was too heavy for the thief to escape and may have represented a “significant” amount of the stolen items.
The suspect was wearing a beige coat, blue hat, with his face covered, and blue latex gloves. A witness was interviewed. The investigation is ongoing.
“The plans went ‘bottoms up’ when the suspect couldn’t handle the weight of his stolen load,” quipped Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
Less than 15 minutes earlier, someone broke into a business in the 1200 block of Bay Avenue and stole two parcels. However, their contents is unknown.
Early the next morning a second suspect broke into the same business and stole a digital receiver worth about $100. Police say the business had been left unsecured overnight.
Later that morning they received a report that $500 in cash had been stolen from another unsecured business in the 1300 block of Bay Avenue.
“Trail RCMP asks business owners to make sure their buildings are secure, surveillance is working, and to respond to alarm triggers if they occur,” Wicentowich said.
“These crimes can be challenging to prevent and solve if the police only learn about them after the fact.”
Youth hospitalized for excessive drinking
A 13-year-old Fruitvale girl was taken to hospital after being found unresponsive Friday evening in a washroom at Beaver Valley May Days.
Police say the girl is believed to had an “excessive amount” of alcohol with a friend before falling unconscious. She awoke by the time officers arrived.
They contacted her parents who took her to hospital for assessment.
“Trail RCMP is thankful that we were able to intervene in this situation before it took a more serious turn,” Wicentowich said. “Parents, please take some time to talk to your kids about personal responsibility when unsupervised by an adult and the dangers of alcohol.”
Saturday is not alright for fighting
Police arrested a 54-year-old Fruitvale man for being drunk in public and causing a disturbance at Beaver Valley May Days on Saturday.
They say he was trying to start a fight with other patrons. Festival staff threw him out but he tried to return as police arrived.
He was jailed until he sobered up.
Shout, shout he let it all out
Police also arrested a 31-year-old Fruitvale man Saturday who started shouting obscenities at police officers at Beaver Valley May Days.
Officers told him to calm down and return to his friends, who also tried to calm him down, but to no avail.
He was arrested for being drunk in public and causing a disturbance. Police say he resisted arrest but eventually was jailed without serious incident.
He was jailed overnight and released once sober with a $115 ticket.
Beaver Valley residents nabbed for drunk driving
A 43-year-old Fruitvale woman was issued a 90-day roadside ban and had her vehicle impounded after her vehicle crossed into his lane on Bluebird Road on Saturday night.
Police say the officer had to swerve to avoid a collision. The woman provided a breath sample that resulted in a fail.
The same evening, an officer spotted a 44-year-old Montrose man driving erratically on Columbia Gardens Road. He also provided a breath sample and also failed.
He too received a 90-day roadside ban and had his vehicle impounded.
