Charge laid in fatal crash at Tarrys

A charge has now been laid in a fatal crash on Highway 3A at Tarrys last year between a BC Transit bus and a Purolator van.

RCMP Insp. Chad Badry said a charge of driving without due care and attention was laid June 28 against the van’s driver, who will make a first court appearance on Aug. 23. The driver’s name was not released.

The minimum penalty for a conviction is a $100 fine while the maximum penalty is a fine of $2,000, six months in jail, or both.

Sixteen students visiting from Quebec as part of a Selkirk College program were on board the bus. A 19-year-old sitting next to the window where the van struck the bus was critically injured.

Although her classmates performed first-aid that allowed her to be transferred to hospital in Trail and Kelowna, she died a few days later. Her name was never publicly disclosed.

Badry said the victim’s mother has been made aware of the charge.
