Local conversations seek to identify better support for disabled youth

The Family Action Network (FAN) has teamed up with the Diverse Family Roots Society (DFRS) to facilitate a series of community conversations aimed at enhancing support for disabled children and youth.

By facilitating these conversations, FAN and DFRS hope to better understand and address the obstacles and successes experienced by children and youth with disabilities.

Additionally, they seek to build on the existing strengths of community-based models while exploring the potential successes of collaborative and connected networks.

The sessions will celebrate effective support strategies and work towards solutions for identified issues.

Input from families will be central to these discussions, which will take place in Trail and Grand Forks. Service providers will also join to discuss organizational and institutional challenges.

Funded through Inclusion BC, Ben Postmus, Executive Director of DFRS, stated that the information and data gathered at the events will be provided to Inclusion BC to highlight local concerns and potential solutions.

“We’re recording these conversations and creating a path, which is a template for planning with a beginning and an end. We’re going to incorporate that path into these sessions so that families and professionals actually have something tangible to look at and use as a resource on what we talked about and what we plan together.”

Two in-person events will be held in Trail and Grand Forks in the coming months. One virtual event and one hybrid event are also being held to accomodate those who can’t make it in person.

For those who can’t attend any of the events can still join the conversation through an online survey.

Families who complete the survey will receive a $15 gift card, and those who attend in person will receive a cash honorarium and dinner.
