Trail Air Cadets participate in effective speaking competition

Trail Air Cadet Joachim Aquino has been named the local Squadron’s representative to compete in the upcoming regional competition.

The 531 City of Trail Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron held a speaking competition on March 4 to determine who would participate in the upcoming event.

Competitors had several weeks to prepare a speech from one of the approved topics from the Air Cadet League of Canada, they also did an impromptu speech to test their ability to think quickly.

Competitors were coached by Volunteer Instructor Mark Sirges and the competition was judged by Paul Butler, Trail City Council member and Branch Manager of Kootenay Savings Credit Union in Trail, along with Mike Bushore, Chief Risk and Operations Officer of Kootenay Savings Credit Union, and Jordan Walker, former Cadet Warrant Officer of 531 Trail RCACS.

16-year-old Grade 11 student delivered a speech on three remarkable Canadian inventions and their impact on Canada and the world.

Aquino’s favorite aspects of the Cadet program are the opportunities it provides and the camaraderie it fosters. One of his most memorable experiences was visiting Ottawa with his squadron. When asked about the inspiration behind his speech, Aquino shared, “Canada is currently in a turbulent time. Although I immigrated here, I believe patriotism helps reinforce our identity as Canadians. And what better way to do that than by recognizing the valuable contributions we have made to the world?”

On March 8, Aquino competed in the Kootenay in the regional competition and placed 2nd.

Over the next several months there are many exciting activities planned for the Trail air cadets. Cadets will be competing in a Running Biathlon, attending an outdoor weekend, and flying in both gliders and powered aircraft.
