The Mayor of Nelson is reflecting on why an important downtown project lost out on proper funding from the City’s annual Columbia Basin Trust grant allocation.
John Dooley says the planned mural that will brighten up the bland walls of the Civic Arena should not have been considered as an arts piece.
As a result a Council-appointed arts jury decided not to fund it when weighing up the many other applicants.
Council ultimately awarded $10,000 of the Sports Council’s $30,000 ask for phase one.
They hope to find other maintenance funds so those ugly high-visibility walls on the old arena can become a focal point rather than eyesore.
